Today at the EU-Energieforum organized by VERBUND there was a good presentation of the central aspects of the EAG Austrian energy law package by representatives of the responsible Austrian ministry (BMK).
Confronted with the question if the presented figure below reflects all the renewable energy support costs for the objective of climate neutrality in 2040, their – in my view absolutely correct – answer given was “a part of it”.
This prompts me to reflect a bit on that:
– the 27 TWh additional renewable electricity generation, as envisaged with the EAG, should bring the electricity sector somewhat close to climate neutrality
– however, electricity represents only ≈25% of the total final energy demand
– even more, due to the fact that the AT electricity sector is already now >70% renewable, the level of the resulting GHG emissions reductions is ≈10%
Bottom line:
– looking forward to a hopefully well-working EAG that swiftly triggers the necessary investments into this 27 TWh additional renewable generation
– however, around three quarters of national GHG emissions are energy related → therefore we urgently need similar efforts for a holistic energy transformation that comprises effective solutions also for the heating, industry and mobility sector
